Linerless in Food Service: Why QSR Are Changing

The food service and food delivery sector is undergoing a transformation in labeling. The combination of allergen regulations, food traceability and the boom in delivery has multiplied the number of labels that each establishment needs to produce daily.

The labeling challenge in food service

A restaurant with delivery service needs to label each order with content information, allergens, preparation date and expiration date. Many also add tamper-proof seals on bags. This means between 3 and 5 labels per order.

A location with 200 daily orders easily generates 600–1,000 labels per day. Multiplied by a chain of 10 locations, we are talking about 6,000–10,000 labels daily. And with each label, a siliconized liner that ends up on the kitchen floor or in the trash.

Specific problems in the kitchen

The siliconized liner on a kitchen floor is a real hazard. It is slippery, sticks to shoes and creates unsafe conditions in an environment where there is already speed, heat and liquids. In addition, it takes up space in trash bins that should be reserved for organic waste.

Roll changes during service are another critical point. When the kitchen is at full capacity, stopping to change a roll of labels interrupts the workflow.

Why linerless is the answer

With a linerless printer such as the ARGOX D4-280, the restaurant solves several problems simultaneously. There is no liner to dispose of, the process is faster (2 steps instead of 3), rolls last longer (up to 60% more labels) and labels are cut to the exact required length.

This last point is especially useful in food service: an allergen label may need more space than an order label. With linerless, a single roll serves all purposes.

The economic data

For a restaurant printing 1,000 labels per day, the estimated savings are around €600 per year in consumables, time and waste management. With a kit priced at €425, the return on investment is achieved in about 4 months.

For a chain of 10 locations, annual savings can exceed €6,000. And that does not include improvements in workplace safety and contribution to sustainability goals.

The ARGOX D4-280 Plus Linerless starter kit at €320 includes printer and consumables. It connects via USB, Ethernet or Bluetooth and is compatible with major restaurant management software.
