ARGOX D4-280 Linerless: Full Technical Review & Specs

The ARGOX D4-280 is SATO's proposal to democratize linerless labeling. It positions itself as the printer with the best quality-price ratio in its segment, featuring a modular design that facilitates maintenance and connectivity that covers practically any integration scenario.

Technical Specifications

The D4-280 Plus uses direct thermal printing at 203 dpi (8 dots/mm), with a maximum speed of 6 inches per second. The maximum printing width is 108 mm and the maximum length is 152.4 mm, sufficient for most commercial and industrial labeling applications.

The 32 MB SDRAM and 16 MB Flash ROM memory allows for internal storage of label formats and fonts, streamlining printing in high-volume environments.

Connectivity

As standard, it includes USB, RS-232 (serial port), and Ethernet. Integrated Ethernet connectivity is a major differentiator: many printers in this price range only offer it as an option. Additionally, it can be expanded with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v2.1 modules for printing from Android devices via the iLabelPrint+ app.

Emulation Compatibility

One of the D4-280's strengths is its compatibility with three emulation languages: PPLA (Datamax compatible), PPLB (native ARGOX/SATO language), and PPLZ (Zebra ZPL compatible). The printer automatically detects the language, greatly simplifying migration from other brands.

Database Connection

The D4-280 supports ODBC connection to integrate with Excel, CSV, MS Access, MS SQL, Oracle MySQL, and dBASE. This allows direct printing from ERP systems, WMS, and corporate databases without the need for intermediate software.

Modular Design

The modular design allows for the print head, platen roller, and cutter to be changed without tools. This reduces maintenance downtime and allows the user to perform basic repairs without needing a technician.

The special anti-jam coating prevents issues with linerless label adhesive, which is one of the system's technical challenges.
